Aftercare Instructions for Permanent Makeup/Tattoo(s)

Immediate Aftercare

You may experience swelling or redness.  Ice packs, protected with a cloth, can be used to reduce swelling.

Wash hands before touching treated areas.  Keep areas clean and moist with a very light coat of Aquaphor Healing Ointment.   Apply ointment 3 times a day for approximately 7 days.  Always apply with a clean cotton tipped applicator.  Do not use “antibiotic” ointments or creams as they may cause an allergic reaction.

Do not pick, scratch, or rub during the healing process.  Loss of color, uneven healing, scarring, or infection may result.  Skin in the treated area will flake off naturally, usually within a few days.  You may gently brush off any flakiness as long as you are not removing it by force.

Keep makeup away from treated areas while healing. If makeup must be used near the treated area, buy new, including a mascara that comes off easily with water. (use water sparingly)

If tattooing lips, use a lip moisturizer such as Burt’s Bees Lip Balm for two weeks after they have peeled. It is important to keep treated area out of direct sunlight.  As the darkness flakes off, lips may look very light.  Give lips approximately 7-8 weeks for the color to develop. (If you have ever experienced a cold sore, a Rx medication must be taken two days prior, followed by 3 days after the procedure)

Please do not use other “home” remedies” during this time.

First  7 to 10 Days

Refrain from splashing water on face while washing or showering. Do not expose your healing skin to hot tubs, saunas, salt water, or chlorinated pools.    Avoid sun tanning, long periods of direct sun exposure, tanning beds, skin creams, ointments, or lotions other that the ones listed above.

The color will appear darker during the healing process, approximately 7 days.  Ultimately, the pigment will fade roughly 30% to 50%.  A follow-up “perfecting” appointment should be scheduled within 4 to 8 weeks from your initial appointment.   Two appointments are usually necessary to complete most permanent makeup procedures and to achieve the desired outcome. For best results, both appointments should be scheduled within a two month period.  In some cases, a 3rd appointment is desired. Touch up fees apply.

Long Term Aftercare

For lasting results maintenance is required   The amount of color fading depends on several variables: Sun exposure, chemical peels, lasers, or other medical procedures.  Topical Skin Bleaching Creams, Retin-A, Renova, Alpha Hydroxy and Glycolic Acids must not be used on treated areas. They will alter color.  To minimize fading, use sunscreen protection with SPF 30 or more prior to sun exposure. Please inform your physician of your cosmetic tattoos prior to any skincare treatments.  Avoid lasers on pigmented areas as laser treatments may result in adverse changes to permanent cosmetics.

Possible Causes of Premature and/or Uneven Fading

  1. Color may have pulled red or grey due to skin undertones (can be corrected at 2nd appt.)

  2. If skin is excessively oily

  3. If at time of procedure, skin swelled and pigment stopped grabbing

Know the Facts about Permanent Makeup/ Tattoo Applications

Pain:  There can be pain even after the topical anesthetic has been used.  Anesthetics work better on some people than others.  Lip procedures are more likely to involve some pain.

Infection:  Infection is very unusual. The areas treated must be kept clean and only freshly cleaned hands should touch the areas.

Uneven Pigmentation:  This can result from poor healing, infection, bleeding or many other causes.  Your follow up appointment will likely correct any uneven appearance.

Asymmetry:  Every effort will be made to avoid asymmetry; however, our faces are not symmetrical.  Adjustments may be needed during the follow up appointment to correct any unevenness.

Excessive Swelling or Bruising:  Some people bruise and swell more than others.  Ice packs may help relieve this. The bruising and swelling typically disappears within 1 to 5 days.  Some people do not bruise or swell at all.

Eye Exposure:  There is a small risk of eye injury when an eyeliner procedure is performed.  To avoid corneal abrasion, Celluvisc Lubricant Eye Gel can be used to protect the eye prior to the procedure.  Eye drops are recommended to cleanse and flush the eye after the procedure is complete.

Anesthetics:  Topical Anesthetics are used to numb the areas that are to be tattooed.  Lidocaine Hydrochloride, Tetracaine, Benzocaine, Prilocaine, and Epinephrine in a cream or gel form are typically used.  If you are allergic to any of these please inform me.

Cold Sores or Fever Blisters:  If you are prone to cold sores or fever blisters (herpes simplex), there is a high probability that an outbreak will occur if you are having your lips tattooed.   It is advised that you call your doctor for an anti viral prescription i.e.; Zoverax, Acyclovir, to be taken two days before and 3 days following your lip procedure

Allergic Reaction:  There is a small possibility of an allergic reaction.  By request, you may take a 5-7 day patch test to determine this.
